The following article has been replaced with a newer article: How to link a zyBook assignment to an LMS
The article below is still relevant but will retire on 12/15 in favor of the newer article linked above.
Please read our article on Single sign-on first.
Also, please ensure that your LMS administrator has configured Brightspace with the authentication secret and key. You will not be able to follow along with this guide until that has been done.
NOTE: Linking assignments to an LMS is not required for zyBook class use. (1) Assignments are not even necessary; instructors can simply announce due dates and then run reports to generate a csv that can be uploaded to an LMS gradebook. (2) Assignments, if desired, are created in zyBooks, which also generate csv files that can be uploaded. We recommend starting with the reports approach and considering assignments in a subsequent term (many are happy with and stay with the reports approach). Then, if assignment integration is desired, one can read on.
Step 1 - Creating the link in Brightspace
Begin by going to your course content. Go to Add Existing Activities and then choose External Learning Tools:
Scroll to the bottom of the modal and click "Create New LTI Link"
Enter the title for your zyBook. This is the title that your students will see in Brightspace. Then enter the LTI URL, https://lti.zybooks.com/v1/lti_provider and then click "Create and Insert".
A new assignment is now created. Click on the newly made assignment link and it will open zyBooks within the Brightspace platform.
Step 2 - Configure the link on the zyBooks website
The zyBooks window that will open will ask you to choose which zyBook you are linking to:
Within the zyBook you choose, you will need to select "Create or link assignment":
A list of visible assignments will be present. Note that if your assignments are "Hidden" you will need to reveal them before you can link to them.
Click the blue "Link" text next to an assignment to create the connection between that assignment and the grade book.
If you do not have any assignments yet, you can follow along with our "How to create an assignment" article.
Assignments with a blue link icon next to them have already been linked.
You can create as many links to a single assignment as desired. For example, if a class has 4 sections and you have one canvas shell for each section, you may wish to create one link from each shell to the same assignment.
Step 3 - Adding the assignment to your grade book
Next, scroll down in Brightspace to the Activity Details box that appears at the bottom of the page. Under the heading "Assessment", click "Add a grade item".
Then click the new plus button that appears.
Add a name, this is the name that will appear in your gradebook, then set the point value. Brightspace typically defaults to 10. If your Brightspace assesment has a different point value than the zyBooks assignment, the score will be converted correctly.
When you are ready, click "Create" at the bottom. The create modal will close and you should see a new blue "Save" button in the Assessment box. Click "Save" to save the assessment.
That item will now be available in your gradebook.
Step 4 - Finishing touches
Return to the assignments list in Brightspace and locate the assignment you just created. Then click the small arrow next to the assignment title and select "Edit properties in-place"
This will open an edit experience that will allow you to add a due date.
There is also a checkbox labeled "Open as External Resource" which will cause the zyBook to open in a new tab instead of Brightspace.
IMPORTANT: Students will need to click on each LTI link you create in order for their scores to be sent to the grade book.
