With our Participation Activity answers readily available to students, instructors often wonder if most students will just rapidly click to get points without trying to learn. We’ve analyzed activity data of thousands of students at dozens of universities. The finding was heartening—most students earnestly attempt the activities. It seems students realize the material is useful and respects their time. (With that said, about 3% do blatantly cheat the system. You can lead a horse to water…) Here are some papers summarizing our research: SIGCSE 2017 ASEE 2016.
Our Challenge Activities (aka "homework problems") don't give away the answers, but like any textbook's exercises, solutions may end up on the web. However, a few things help us. First, zyBooks are configurable and can be mixed and matched too, so students have a harder time correlating posted solutions to their own zyBook's activities. Second, many of our CAs auto-generate the problems, so solutions may differ for each student. Third, we continually update our activities, so posted solutions soon become out of date.
